Texts by Carol J. Clover, Stan Douglas, and Scott Watson. Interview with the artist by Diana Thater

Published as part of Phaidon’s Contemporary Artists series, this fully illustrated publication provides a comprehensive overview of the artist’s photographs, films, and video works. Canadian curator and writer Scott Watson surveys the artist’s work in relation to late twentieth-century aesthetics, politics, and psychoanalysis, while American artist Diana Thater conducts an in-depth interview with Douglas. Carol J. Clover, a professor on film and Nordic mythology, focuses on the film, Der Sandmann (1995). The Artist’s Choice text is by French philosopher Gilles Deleuze from his 1967 essay “Humor, Irony and the Law,” and the histories and ideas behind the artist’s works are explained in the Artist’s Writings section, alongside an essay on the teleplays of Samuel Becket and an interview with curator and critic Lynne Cooke.
