Text by Andrew Durbin
Dzama / Pettibon is a collaborative zine between Marcel Dzama and Raymond Pettibon, originally published to coincide with Printed Matter’s 2015 New York Art Book Fair.
Raymond Pettibon has been making zines since he graduated from UCLA in the late seventies, but he has rarely collaborated as he did with Marcel Dzama on Dzama / Pettibon. After meeting at David Zwirner Books in late July 2015 to discuss possible projects, the two artists began to embark on their shared endeavor—something that would develop into an exceptionally beautiful, exquisite corpse–inspired form. Pettibon and Dzama traded drawings and spent the rest of the summer reworking each other’s pieces—illustrating, collaging, accentuating, and writing—to make a brand new body of collaborative work. In September, the unique pieces arrived back at David Zwirner Books where they were photographed and arranged in zine form in close collaboration with both artists. The first printing, which was produced digital offset in an edition of 200 numbered copies, sold out within a day at the New York Art Book Fair.
Dzama / Pettibon is reprinted on the occasion of the artists’ exhibition of collaborative works Forgetting the Hand at David Zwirner in New York. This revised and expanded edition includes nearly twenty additional works made since their New York Art Book Fair collaboration, as well as a new text by the poet Andrew Durbin.
